Free school meals are currently only offered to pupils who receive certain benefits, but the British Medical Association believes the meals should be given to all children aged four to seven. It has also recommended that school fruit and vegetable schemes, similar to those in England, are brought in here in Northern Ireland.Dr Paul Darragh believes problems with diet are becoming an increasing concern, with 10% of children in Northern Ireland aged between 2 to 15 obese. He explained: “It is critical that healthy eating patterns are established when people are young and we believe that providing a healthy meal to children every day will help establish those patterns.“Young children in England already benefit from a daily fruit and veg scheme, getting a piece of fresh fruit or a portion of vegetables every day, and we would like to see a similar scheme introduced here, ideally with all primary school children benefitting from it.”
